Our Mission
We, the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence, with a unique gift to serve Hispanics, are inspired by Sister Benitia Vermeersch, our foundress, and Our Lady of Guadalupe. We are called to live the Gospel and minister to all people, especially the poor.
We were founded in Houston, Texas, in 1930, by Sister Mary Benitia Vermeersch in response to a special need, namely the material and spiritual needs of the refugees who fled from Mexico during the revolution of 1910-1936. Sister Benitia, organized a group of bilingual catechists, eighth grade girls from the parochial school, who were eager to teach catechism to the public school children. Sister Benitia eventually moved these women to San Antonio, Texas, where she built their Mother House, St. Andrew’s Convent.
We are the first group of native born Mexican American Women Religious, called to serve God’s people in the United States. We recognize that our ethnicity is a special gift to the Church that places us in a unique position to serve as a bridge between the American and the Hispanic culture. As consecrated religious women we live and have worked primarily in Texas, California, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Kansas.
