Elizabeth was born in Icteghem, Belgium in 1880. She cameto the U.S. as a
childand lost both her parents soon after their arrival in the U.S. She and
her brothers were orphaned and wereplaced at a local orphanage in San Antonio.
The St. Joseph's orphanage was directed by the Sisters of Incarnate Word ofCharity
andyoung Elizabeth became interested in the work the Sisters did in Mexico and
at theage of fifteen went to do someministry in Mexico where she grew to love the
Mexican people.

Elizabeth joined the Sisters of Divine Providence in SanAntonio and
became Sister Mary Benitia Veermersch, CDP.When she was serving as
principle at Our Lady of GuadalupeSchool in Houston, Texas she started a
group of young women tominister to the needs of the the Mexican immigrants.
Herwork was successful andshe was requested to do similar work in
San Antonio.Sister Benitia came to San Antonio and with some help from
Archbishop Robert E. Lucey and Mother Angelique Ayers,CDP she founded the
Missionary Catechists of DivineProvidence who were approved as a religious
group by theChurch in 1946. Sister Benitia died in 1975 and left some writings.
Among the cherished pieces of writings she left are some Pious sayings which
reveal her strength, her faith and her humor. "A woman without a laugh in her
